Starting to Work With Me

I typically begin with a free consultation were we talk about your business strategy, existing markets, and aspirations for the technology. Then I can provide a high-level proposal outlining what I can do for you: timescales, costings and deliverables.

I pride myself on being forthright and honest about my expertise. I am willing to tell you honestly if I would not contribute to your company's success. My initial consultation is always free, even if we can't find a suitable way to work together.

Costs

R&D has a reputation for being risky. I try to minimise your exposure to the risk.

For many projects I can work to a fixed-fee for the deliverables we agree. If, for some reason, I am unable to complete the work according to our agreement, then you are not liable for any of the cost of the research.

My standard daily rate is £1100 (c. $2200), plus expenses, dropping to £850 ($1700) after the 5th day of a project. Partly because of the regulations on R&D tax relief, projects usually last between 10 and 30 days, although I am happy to accept projects outside this range. Project costs may be lower if there are portions of the work I can subcontract (always by prior agreement with you).

In some cases it is more tax efficient for a company to legally employ me on a fixed-term basis. I am happy to do this, if your finance team would prefer it.

Delivery is not the End

I am always keen to provide training and technical support for your staff after the project is delivered, to make sure you can exploit your new IP successfully.

Inevitably new opportunities arise for your new technology, and I am happy to continue our relationship to make sure your team is equipped to respond, whether or not this requires additional R&D effort.
